When seniors with Alzheimer’s or dementia can’t participate in daily activities, they can easily become bored. Boredom can lead to agitation, anxiety, depression, and anger. It can increase their chances of sundowning. There are ways to prevent boredom with activities. This will get them engaged and help reduce their risk for need of medication for agitation, behavior, and depression.
- Velcro dot craft sticks – participants can create shapes or stack the sticks together. Making the sticks colorful becomes eye-catching and more intriguing to use.
- Easy shapes and patterns – cut large shapes out of foam that allows them to put pieces together. Almost like a jumbo size puzzle, but with less pieces. Again, colors and different fabrics will make it more appealing to play with.
- Foam lacing shapes – use bright colored shapes and put holes along the edges. Then allow the seniors to put string through the holes that can somewhat replicate sewing or cross stitch.
- Fun with crazy straws – cut bright felt sheets into little circles and puncture a whole in the center. This will allow seniors to put on the crazy shaped straws.
